Not the Time to Change Alberta’s Labour Laws
(Edmonton, March 14, 2017) – A leading association of Canadian construction contractors is encouraging the Alberta Government to avoid unnecessary changes to the province’s Labour Relations Code, following yesterday’s announcement that the code will be reviewed.
“Alberta has a diverse pool of labour models and that diversity is what makes Alberta’s construction industry strong, competitive and attractive,” said Paul de Jong, President of the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada (PCA). “We want to ensure that any changes being considered do not weaken a leading industry in this province, and put it at risk.”
As part of its review of the Labour Relations Code, the government has asked Albertans for their feedback over the coming weeks. PCA will be an active participant in the process.
“On behalf of construction contractors who employ thousands of Albertans, we’re raising a cautionary flag,” added de Jong. “Any risky or unnecessary labour code changes should not be contemplated, especially now with industry and the economy in recovery, and investor confidence only just beginning to rebuild.”
