Ten-lane Bridge Best Solution to George Massey Tunnel Congestion
Vancouver (March 14, 2018) – The Progressive Contractors Association of Canada (PCA) is urging the BC government to give serious consideration to a new report suggesting the cost of replacing the George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge is far less than original estimates.
“We’ve always believed a 10-lane bridge was the most practical solution for easing the worst traffic bottle-neck in the province,” said Rieghardt van Enter, Regional Director, BC, for the Progressive Contractors Association of Canada. “Now there’s another good reason to move forward with the bridge, without further delay.”
A City of Delta report suggests the cost of replacing the tunnel with a 10-lane bridge would be $2.6 billion, $900 million less than the initial estimate.
“This project is just too important to commuters and businesses not to be a top priority for the province,” added van Enter. “The sooner there’s a decision on the best solution, the sooner British Columbians will benefit.”
Following several years of study and consultation into the project, the BC government announced a technical review last year to consider options for upgrading or replacing the George Massey tunnel.
