The Progressive Contractors Association of Canada (PCA), representing construction companies that play a key role in delivering major energy, resource, and infrastructure projects across the country, welcomes details shared by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith today about the development of a new bitumen pipeline from Alberta to the West Coast.
“Yesterday’s announcement by Premier Smith and Prime Minister Carney is another demonstration of the commitment laid out by the provincial and federal governments to major projects. These projects aren’t just talked about, they are moving forward without unnecessary delays,” said Paul de Jong, President & CEO of PCA. “Utilizing the existing route leverages existing infrastructure, reduces the overall project cost and brings good paying jobs to market."
PCA supports the effort to recognize the project as being in the national interest and to ensure it proceeds through a more streamlined and predictable regulatory process. At the same time, the association emphasized that the pipeline must be constructed safely, cost-effectively, and competitively, with all capable Canadian contractors and skilled workers having a fair opportunity to participate.
“Building a more self-reliant, resilient, and prosperous Canada requires open competition,” de Jong added. “When procurement is fair and competitive, projects are delivered more effectively, workers and apprentices gain more opportunities, and taxpayers receive stronger value.”
PCA member companies are prepared to contribute their demonstrated experience in safety, quality construction, and successful project execution to the development of this pipeline. PCA looks forward to engaging with the Government of Alberta, the federal government, Indigenous partners, and project proponents to help ensure the project creates lasting economic benefits for Canadians.
